Glaucoma is an eye disease that attacks the optic nerve. It’s the leading cause of blindness in the United States. High pressure of aqueous fluid within the eye, known as intraocular pressure, causes the nerve damage. The fluid does not properly move from behind the eye which then ultimately merges into the bloodstream. The most common form is primary open-angle glaucoma. There are no signs or symptoms, except gradual loss of vision.
Glaucoma & Medical Marijuana
Ophthalmologists, eye doctors, primary goal is to lower the IOP levels. Usually through prescription eye drops and/or surgery. Treating glaucoma with medical cannabis dates back to the 1970’s. Studies from the National Eye Institute have shown that regular use of medical cannabis can be beneficial with lowering IOP. However, not all ophthalmologists agree.
